The American Civil War transformed a nation and the lives of countless ordinary men who answered the call to serve. Allegheny to Andersonville follows the journey of Pennsylvania soldiers from their homes in the Allegheny Valley through the hardships of military service and into one of the war's most infamous prison camps.
Drawing on military records, personal letters, diaries, newspapers, and firsthand accounts, this nonfiction work seeks to tell their stories with historical accuracy while honoring the courage, endurance, and sacrifice of those who lived through one of America's defining conflicts.
More than a history of battles, Allegheny to Andersonville is a story about the people behind the uniforms, their hopes, fears, friendships, and determination to survive.
